The appearance of the mall is that of grandeur and made to look impressive. With 3 large floors that stretch on in long hallways that are wide and very open with a nice view of the glass ceiling above. The shops line the walls all the way down the halls with very few places that are waiting for shops to be placed within them. The security patrols the entire mall to add in a safe but tense feeling within the mall as they watch everyone. They are also quick to follow us and refuse to allow any pictures within or outside of the mall. The place has a beautiful appearance but doesn’t feel very relaxing. The entire mall just gives off a feeling of discomfort and doesn’t allow one to just relax and enjoy themselves. It also feels isolated regardless of the people within the building the and how close all the stores are together it still has a kind of depressing feeling with in the mall. The places to are all located in a single place in the center of the mall as a type of central hub.
The smell of the place is bland even with all the different stores. The smells of perfume and food and all the other miscellany smells seem to just fade away. The only times we seem to smell something is only when we’re right in front of it. Otherwise it all seems to be covered up by this very bland smell throughout the mall. It makes the liveliness of the mall just seem dead without unique smells.
The sounds of the mall are loud and noise and tend to drown out the “relaxing” piano music playing through out the mall’s speakers. But even with all the noise that is going on it still feels lonely and almost far off in some other place rather than close by, its more like the large empty halls are just amplifying the sounds to create a kind of artificial feeling of being with people.
The entire place just feels unfriendly and has a more of a feeling that deters people from stopping and enjoying themselves, but instead to keep moving constantly and shop and move on. The feeling is increased even more from the security guards that are always watching and observing anyone that stays in one place for a while. Which adds more tension and feelings of unease and discomfort within the mall making the entire experience unpleasant and uninviting. Thus, giving the idea of a type of “Evil Paradise”
The swap meet’s appearance is that of a very close together with halls that are lined with merchandise that goes all the way down the paths, completely covering the walls to the point of not being able to see them anymore. All along the way of the halls are booths that are selling their own merchandise all throughout the place. Even with there being pathways that lead through out the place it is still easy to get lost while wondering the swap meet. The pure disorganized feel of the place along with the shops that sell similar items, seems to take away are sense of direction, and leaves us with wondering if we had already been a certain way already. However, we can’t help but keep wondering throughout the place looking at all the things they have for sell instead of looking for the way out or find out where your located at.
The smells of the food stalls are absolutely wonderful and are located at either side of the swap meet and make us want to stop and get a quick bit to eat before heading out again through the place. The smells add on to the chaos of the place but doesn’t take away from the experience and in fact it instead seems to add on to the experience as the combinations of smells seem to mix well together and speak to our stomachs native tongue.
The sounds of the meet are constant and lively. The place is constantly playing very lively music that fits with in the environment, allowing shoppers to enjoy their walk through the place as the peruse the merchandise of all the different booths. On top of this all throughout the place we can hear the shoppers and the merchants having conversations with each other about all kinds of topics though many of the people speaking are speaking in Spanish. It gives the place a very friendly and inviting feeling to the space that makes us want to stay and enjoy the place even more. All the sounds add up to make for a great experience. Even with some of the shops playing their own music it all clashes together well and just adds to that positive energy through out the place.
